This Is The Holy Spirit

October 18, 2015 | Michael Davis
John 14:16-18

Notes

The Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person in the God-head, the Trinity.

The Holy Spirit is a GIFT from God given to ALL who confess Jesus as God!

The Holy Spirit desires to do more with you than you could ever imagine!

Our lives will either be lived trusting in what we can do, or learning to trust in what the Spirit of God in us wants to do!

Cessationist: someone who believes that certain spiritual gifts, typically those of a more overtly supernatural nature, ceased in the church sometime late in the 1st century.

When the Spirit of God leads, follow!

Verses

{And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. John 14:16-18 NLT}{The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. Romans 8:11 NLT}{Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 NLT}{But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. John 16:7 NLT}{But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 NLT}{On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages… And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done! Acts 2:1-8 NLT}{Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. 1 Corinthians 14:1-5 NLT}{I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you. But in a church meeting I would rather speak five understandable words to help others than ten thousand words in an unknown language. 1 Corinthians 14:18-19 NLT}{Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:29-31 NLT}{There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all… God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Corinthians 12:4, 7-8 NLT}

Quotes

A.W. Tozer : The Spirit-filled life is not a special, deluxe edition of Christianity. It is part and parcel of the total plan of God for His people. (Mystery of the Holy Spirit); Samuel Chadwick : He is the Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of witness, the Spirit of conviction, the Spirit of power, the Spirit of holiness, the Spirit of light, the Spirit of adoption, the Spirit of help, the Spirit of liberty, the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of revelation, the Spirit of promise, the Spirit of love, the Spirit of meekness, the Spirit of grace, and the Spirit of glory. It is for the church to explore the resources of the Spirit; the resources of the world are futile. (The Way to Pentecost); Jonathan Edwards : Since the canon of the Scripture has been completed, and the Christian Church fully founded and established, these extraordinary gifts have ceased. (Charity & It's Fruits);
