Passage: Matthew 15:30-31
Notes
Verses
{And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel. Matthew 15:30-31 ESV}{Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NIV}{So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 NLT}{Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. So they sent a delegation to make peace with him because their cities were dependent upon Herod’s country for food. The delegates won the support of Blastus, Herod’s personal assistant, and an appointment with Herod was granted. When the day arrived, Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his throne, and made a speech to them. The people gave him a great ovation, shouting, “It’s the voice of a god, not of a man!”
Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died.
Meanwhile, the word of God continued to spread, and there were many new believers. Acts 12:20-24 NLT}{About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church. He had the apostle James (John’s brother) killed with a sword. When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter. Acts 12:1-3 NLT}
Quotes
C.S. Lewis : We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. (The Weight of Glory); Josephus : Herod put on a garment made wholly of silver and came into the theatre early in the morning; at which time the silver of his garment being illuminated by the fresh reflection of the sun’s rays upon it, shone out in a surprising manner. (Antiquities of the Jews); Ashton Kutcher : There’s an entitlement that is starting to emerge that I think is unhealthy for people and unhealthy for our country. (); Jean Twenge and Keith Campbell : A prominent feature of current western culture is its growing sense of individual narcissistic entitlement. And such a sense of entitlement equips one very badly to deal not only with one's own failure but also with somebody else's success. (); Craig Groeshel : Entitlement is that little voice that take “I want it” and adds “and I deserve it.” Entitlement provides fuel for the engine of self-justification. (FIGHT); Jared Wilson : We are not entitled to anything. We have graciously been made co-heirs with Jesus, and our response, out of gratitude and joy and love for God, should be humility and servant-hood and sacrifice. (); Josephus : A severe pain arose in his belly, striking with a most violent intensity. And when he had been quite worn out by the pain in his belly for five days, he departed this life, being in the fifty-fourth year of his age and in the seventh year of his reign. (Antiquities of the Jews); C. S. Lewis : There once was in man a true happiness of which now remain to him only the mark and empty trace, which he in vain tries to fill from all his surroundings, seeking from things absent the help he does not obtain in things present. But these are all inadequate, because the infinite abyss can only be filled by an infinite and immutable object, that is to say, only by God Himself. (Reflections on the Psalms); Mark Driscoll : Jesus gives us God. God is our highest treasure, our greatest delight, our deepest joy. Our most profound happiness is that God loves us, that God knows us, that God cares for us, that God has given himself to us and that we get to live for his glory. Not that we have to, but that we get to. We get to finally do the singular cause for which we were made: to glorify God. ();
