OUR STORY

History is important because it enables people to look back and not only learn where they’ve come from, but appreciate those that have gone before them to bring them to where they are.

When one considers the history of GENESIS, they will see that it started as a group of young adults who gathered weekly for a time of Bible study, prayer, and friendship in the summer of 2005. For the better part of a year, this small community of eight people was faithful to meet weekly and seek the Lord as to what He had in mind for their community in the days to come. In the spring of 2006, this small group experienced some new growth and it became clear that the living room in which we met would no longer be sufficient for the 25+ people that were gathering each week.

Over the next few months, we began asking how God might use this growing community to reach other young adults in the Greater-Boston area with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The answer to that prayer was the formation of what is now known as GENESIS.

We held our first public worship gathering on January 7, 2007 in the basement of Hope Christian Church in Winchester. There were 35 people at our first gathering, but the community quickly grew to roughly a hundred young adults by the fall of 2007.  It was at this point that we began to ask the Lord another question: might God be calling GENESIS to establish itself as a new church in the Greater-Boston area?

The GENESIS community, alongside the elders of Hope Christian church, began a 20-month long journey of seeking to discern God’s call on GENESIS. It was with great joy that the elders alongside Michael Davis announced on Sunday, March 22, 2009, that God had called GENESIS to be established as an independent church.

On September 1, 2009, GENESIS officially began its journey as a new church in Woburn, MA. GENESIS is blessed and grateful to have Hope Christian Church serve as our sending church.

GENESIS held its first, and what turned out to be unique, worship gathering at 16 Wheeling Avenue in Woburn, MA on Sunday, September 27, 2009. It was unique in that the worship gathering took place in the parking lot because we had not yet received the necessary permits to obtain building occupancy.  After two parking lot gatherings, GENESIS opened her doors on Sunday, October 11, 2009.

After gathering at 16 Wheeling Ave for nearly four years, by the grace of God, GENESIS relocated to a larger space just a short distance down the road in Woburn.  After an intense 48 days of renovation, GENESIS held its first worship gathering at 35 Olympia Ave on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

On Sunday, September 7, 2014, GENESIS celebrated its five year anniversary.  It was a powerful day of celebrating all that God has done in our midst in five short years.  Countless lives transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ at work in our midst.

On Sunday, October 3rd, 2021, GENESIS launched a NEW location - GENESIS North Shore.  Many individuals from the Woburn location relocated to the North Shore to help establish this new GENESIS Congregation. They began by gathering in a hotel, and now worship in an elementary school in Beverly. Below is the video from that SENDING service.

2025 marked a huge turning point for GENESIS. As always, we began the year with 21 days of focused prayer. This year, our focus was on a PLACE to CALL HOME. Our lease at 35 Olympia Ave. would soon be ending, and we were actively seeking and praying for our new church location. God answered the prayers of His people in a mighty way. A generous member of our church family bid on and purchased a building located at 11 State Street (which is off Olympia Ave) on behalf of GENESIS. As of April 2, 2025, we entered into a rent-to-own agreement and began the work to renovate the warehouse and office spaces into a sanctuary that can accommodate 1000 people, along with a beautiful OPEN SPACE and FAMILY CENTER. We anticipate our grand opening to occur in October!

In the meantime, our church gathers temporarily in the Woburn Memorial High School. This marks the first time a church has been able to conduct worship gatherings in this space, and we are so thankful for the opportunity to bless the school community while we gather there.

We don't know ALL that God has for us in the coming years, but one thing is for certain, by His grace we will remain committed to helping ALL people walk with God.
