I have a friend… we’ll call him John because, well, that’s his name.
Every time I see John, he asks me about my life of prayer. He asks me about other things, but I can always count on John to ask me about my life of prayer. To be honest, there are times when I see John and I avoided John (sorry John) because I do not want to have to tell John once again that ‘It’s not great.’
To be clear, I am super thankful for John and his commitment to help me grow in prayer, but like with anything, when you’re not growing at the rate in which you’d like to grow, having someone ask about your growth is not always easy.
This past Sunday when I saw John, well, John did what John always does…
“Hey Michael, how was prayer for you this past week?”
Before I tell you what I told John, as way of reminder, for the past six-weeks, I’ve been writing about walking… very specifically, walking at God’s pace which as we all now know is three miles an hour.
If you’ve missed some of these devotional thoughts, you can catch up on those posts HERE.
I share that reminder because without it, my answer to John might not make all that much sense.
In short, I was able to tell John that my life of prayer is growing and getting better because I’m walking more.
And just so we’re clear, literally walking. Walking NOT as a metaphor, but actually walking laps around the GENESIS Office Space. Walking in my neighborhood. Walking in the BJ’s or Market Basket parking lot because I decided to park a little further away rather than fight for the spots that are super close to the entryway.
WALKING IS GROWING MY LIFE OF PRAYER
I realize that some people excel at praying in a quiet room… that’s good! If that’s you, keep doing that.
But if that’s not you, like it’s not me, then try walking. And as you walk, simply ask the LORD… “What shall we talk about as we walk together.”
For me…
walking is helping me pray,
walking is helping me listen to God,
walking is helping me hear from God,
walking is helping me talk to God,
walking is helping me to have greater clarity with God.
To my friend, John… thank you! Thanks for always asking me about my life of prayer. It’s not where I’d like it to be, but walking is growing my life of prayer, and for that, I am super grateful!
Before you say that walking and praying are not for you, well, just try it… get out there today and try it. And just know that today, as I’m walking and praying, I’ll be praying specifically that God would meet you on your walk with Him.
And if you do this… and I really hope that you do, I’d love to hear how God met you on your walk today. Tell me on Sunday or hit reply to this email when you get back from your walk.
I’m grateful that God meets us where we are, even when we are walking around parking lots at three miles an hour.
