I’m a worst-case scenario thinker. When anxiety comes calling, I find comfort in considering the worst possible outcome and preparing myself for it. It’s a true toss-up on whether this is a helpful coping strategy or not. On the one hand, it allows me to face my biggest concerns and remove some of the fear associated with the uncertainty of an outcome. On the other, slightly-deformed-hand that’s missing a thumb, I often actually begin to believe that the worst thing will happen and resign myself to it.
I’ve noticed over the years that we can fall into this “catch 22” with our perception of what it’s like to walk with God. Experience tells us that life isn’t even close to perfect, that maintaining an obedient walk with the Lord is terribly difficult, and there will be hurt and pain and disappointment along the way. Maybe it’s best to acknowledge it, prepare for it, expect it. There’s definitely some wisdom in that, but I’m learning that this is just a part of the story.
For as many experiences as we have that teach us to expect the worst, God gives us more reminders of why it’s worth believing He will indeed bring us the best things for us. We only have to open our Bibles to know this. Life isn’t only about walking with God through the hard stuff; it’s also about walking with God through the good stuff! And He gives us so many good things that showcase His love and goodness and kindness and faithfulness and grace.
We’re singing a new song together this weekend called ‘Follow You Anywhere.’ The lyrics remind us of this in a simple and beautiful way. When I reflect on all He is and all He has done, I find that I can’t help but sing along. He does make it easy to love and trust Him!
Follow You Anywhere
You make it easy to love You
You are good and You are kind
You bring joy into my life
You make it easy to trust You
You have never left my side
You’ve been faithful every time
All I want is You, Jesus, all I want is You
You are the refuge I run to
You are the fire that leads me through the night
I’ll follow You anywhere
There’s a million reasons to trust You
Nothing to fear for You are by my side
I’ll follow You anywhere
Jesus, You came to my rescue
Took my place upon that cross
You redeemed what I had lost
Now my whole world revolving around You
You’re the center of my life
You’re the treasure, You’re the prize
Wherever You lead me, whatever it costs me
All I want is You, Jesus, all I want is You
